Betty Blue Jacket in native Oaxacan cotton
Materials and Process:
The Betty Blue Jacket is an oversized style boyfriend jacket with interior and exterior pockets, unlined with handmade red clay buttons created in collaboration indigenous Zapotec artisan family. The cut is based on a vintage Levis piece I own from the 90’s with modifications.
The gorgeous textile is created from a handwoven native costal Oaxacan cotton, which was regeneratively grown with natural rainfall and amongst traditional seasonal corn and bean plantings. The cotton grows in the coastal regions of Oaxaca in this color (there is a range of about 7 colors native cotton grows in Oaxaca) and this color is traditionally called Coyuchi (pronounced `coyushee´). It’s an exquisite rich tawny kaki brown color and within the hand weave of this jacket you can see the subtle variations of the Coyuchi cotton color. After the cotton is hand harvested it is then hand spun on a Charkha wheel and then handwoven.
It is sewn with French seams interiors, 2 roomy interior pockets and two outer pockets, the button holes are hand sewn in a tailor’s button hole style created for longevity.
This is a truly exquisite piece which took many complex craft techniques to create.
