Ceremony Coat 1

$2,600.00

One of a kind textile wearable art work

Ceremony Coat 1

In 2009 I began working closely with various weavers who created by hand a traditional heirloom textile called a “rebozo” a type of shawl. I made a post in my archive here expressing the beauty and importance of this textile to Mexican women along with many images of work wthat I made using this fabric.

In creating pieces with this sacred Mexican textile, I have always kept the scraps and smaller cuttings, because discarding of something which has taken so much effort to bring into existence never made sense to me. So over many years and many large bags full of scraps, moving the bags with me even when I moved to Oaxaca!

The studio has created some lovely quilts over the years and now this is a new piece. I am almost finished with the scraps and I believe to date this is the most exquisite result of them yet, a ceremonial robe/coat. I love taking something traditional an object, technique or concept and placing it into another context.

Each square is carefully joined together by machine stitch by stitch and lined with a handwoven extremely thin cotton which is also made by the rebozo weavers. The linear patterns dance beautifully around the coat while a few scattered blocks of black jump out! There is a perfectly placed green ceramic button created by my good friend and ceramicist Evelyn Alarcón, you can see some more of her work and our past collaborations here. This coat comes with two extra buttons.

There is an interior tie to wrap one side over and the button when hooked created a delicate and elegant drape. can be worn as a dress, a coat a robe- buttoned or open.
