Xaag Collection Textured Runner Rugs
Xaag Pronunciation:
In the indigenous Zapotec language the letter ‘x’ sounds like the english letters ‘sh’
Materials and Processes:
A key Mexchic ingredient has always been to play with classical ideas and turn them upside down,
looking for a new and energized way to see something, appreciating it from another angle, perspective.
In our Xaag Collection we are relooking at the classic wool shag texture, a textile we have worked with since our early beginnings in 2006 with weavers in the state of Mexico via our Disco Trapo Rug Collection. We then touched upon this again in 2022 by creating our Izzy Shag Collection hand woven in cotton with artisans in Oaxaca and now most recently, returning to wool, exploring what the shag would look like created not only on a more artisanal style of loom, a colonial pedal loom, which is one of the slowest for weaving but best for beautiful details but also playing with shape and form, along with shocks of naturally dyed color, all in collaboration with artisans in Teotitlan del Valle, Oaxaca.
Color! A locally procured wool is naturally dyed in colors inspired by the markets of Oaxaca.
MOLÉ: A dark reddish brown hue is the magical and decadent 150 ingredient sauce traditionally made in Oaxaca
HABA FRESCA: A chartreuse green almost fluorescent shade is a fresh “fava bean”
CAMERON CRUDO: A mysterious grey-lilac is named for “raw shrimp” used in ceviche
LECHE QUEMADA: A creamy natural and undyed wool named for “burnt milk” an ice cream only made in Oaxaca.
These magical colors are created using a complex palette of natural dyes, meaning natural materials are locally foraged/sourced created with centuries old recipes passed down through each generation of a weaver’s family,
tightly guarded secrets.
